Is makeup a political statement?

I've gotten a lot of these posts recently - always a running commentary, but lately a glut of them - about how Women Should Not Wear Makeup. It's oppression by the system. As is shaving our pubes, legs, armpits (but oddly, not shaving our heads). I want to say to these people who believe we're complicit in a system that tells us we aren't good enough, I think you are putting way too much importance on a personal aesthetic choice. Do you also have a political stand on gift wrapping packages? Are men who prefer to be clean shaven being held down by The Man as well? I sometimes wear a little makeup and sometimes not. My partner never does. I don't go around applying makeup to others against their will, or shave their body parts while they're sleeping. Yes, there are people who have difficulty believing they are adequate. Yes, there are people who hide behind a social convention. But you seem to have bigger issues than those people.

So I'm asking, as kindly as possible, that you calm the fuck down and live in your own life.
